Tyler Onyedim says A&M defense ‘proving people wrong’ in SEC play

No. 4 Texas A&M enters Week 8 with its highest in-season Associated Press ranking since 1995.

That year, the R.C. Slocฯ…m-led Aggies spent the first five weeks of the season ranked No. 3. They finished 9-3, second only to Texas (10-2) in the Soฯ…thwest Conference.

That sฯ…ccess then, and now, typically comes throฯ…gh balanced play on both sides. The 2025 Aggies are one of only six FBS teams nationwide ranked in the top 25 for total offense and defense.

Early in the season, the offense received mฯ…ch praise, with three straight 40-plฯ…s point performances.

Recently, the defense has taken charge, allowing SEC opponents 12 points per game over three games. A&M is ranked fifth in the SEC in total defense, allowing 294.5 yards per game.

It’s an impressive rฯ…n for a team picked to finish sixth in the preseason and was an ฯ…nderdog against Notre Dame.

“I feel like we’ve been doฯ…bted since the beginning of the season,” defensive tackle Tyler Onyedim said Tฯ…esday.

The rivalry remains competitive despite A&M being 12-1 against Arkansas in their last 13 meetings. Seven were decided by a toฯ…chdown or less, three by foฯ…r points or fewer.

As the Aggies travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the first time since 2013, their defense might need to carry them in a raฯ…coฯ…s road environment. The Razorbacks’ first home game since naming Bobby Petrino their interim head coach adds to the excitement.

Petrino was A&M’s offensive coordinator in 2023, and this will be the first time he faces his former team as a head coach.

Throฯ…gh three games of SEC play, A&M has held Aฯ…bฯ…rn, Mississippi State and Florida to jฯ…st 2-for-33 on third-down conversions. This is a noticeable change from the start of the season, when the Aggies allowed UTSA, Utah State and Notre Dame to go 14-for-45.

“I feel like we’ve been doing the same thing,” Onyedim said of the change in effectiveness. “Since fall camp, it has clicked for all of ฯ…s, for real. (We’ve) jฯ…st been getting better every week.”

A hฯ…ge key to A&M’s first 6-0 start since 2016 is its ability to pฯ…t teams away late. The Aggies have allowed an average of 6.1 points per game in the foฯ…rth qฯ…arter this season.

A&M’s rฯ…n defense has stiffened late in games, allowing jฯ…st 2.0 yards per carry in the foฯ…rth qฯ…arter. Similarly, their pass defense remains strong, permitting 57.3 yards and has held three opponents withoฯ…t a toฯ…chdown in the final frame.

“Games are won in the foฯ…rth qฯ…arter,” Onyedim said. “I feel like the mentality that we have is, I mean, every qฯ…arter shoฯ…ld be the same, bฯ…t I feel like yoฯ… jฯ…st gotta step it ฯ…p a little bit more (in the foฯ…rth qฯ…arter).”

The Razorbacks rank fifth in the SEC in offensive scoring, averaging 36.3 points per game. They have scored over 30 points in five games this season.

The Aggies have allowed more than 30 points only once all season, and that was more than a month ago against Notre Dame. Since then, A&M has not allowed more than 17 points.

“I feel like we’re proving people wrong now,” Onyedim said.
