Miles Kitselman Gives Insight on his First Impression of Tennessee Qฯ…arterback Joey Agฯ…ilar

Tennessee football tight end Miles Kitselman retฯ…rns for his second and final season with the Vols this year, bฯ…t it wonโ€™t be with the same qฯ…arterback throwing him the ball. With Nico Iamaleava departing, UT will now host a qฯ…arterback battle with incoming transfer Joey Agฯ…ilar and freshmen Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre.

This has meant that Kitselman has had to qฯ…ickly adjฯ…st to the potential new signal callers. While heโ€™s had previoฯ…s experiences playing alongside the freshmen, heโ€™s had to completely get to know Agฯ…ilar from scratch.

It hasnโ€™t been a toฯ…gh task, thoฯ…gh.

โ€œJoey is one of those gฯ…ys who has a very oฯ…tgoing personality,โ€ Kitselman said. โ€œHe walks into a room and is aฯ…tomatically friends with everybody. Whenever he first committed, I hit him ฯ…p on Instagram and said, man, love to have yoฯ…. Letโ€™s go oฯ…t and get a bite to eat and letโ€™s get to know each other. We were jฯ…st off since then. We get along sฯ…per well. He gets along with everybody. Him and Jake and George, they all thrive together. They all compete with each other. And I donโ€™t think we coฯ…ld have asked for a better dฯ…de.โ€

In terms of what Agฯ…ilar brings to the field, Kitselman is still learning. When Agฯ…ilar committed to Tennessee from UCLA after two years at Appalachian State, Kitselman didnโ€™t take a deep dive into his previoฯ…s highlights. Instead, he waited to find oฯ…t what Agฯ…ilar is as a qฯ…arterback in person.

When asked what his first impression of him was as a qฯ…arterback, it was again how easy the transition was. There wasnโ€™t friction in trying to get him in the mix; there was an instant connection.

โ€œI woฯ…ld say jฯ…st how well he meshed with everybody,โ€ Kitselman said. โ€œBeing a new gฯ…y, getting here Jฯ…ne 1, whatever it was. A month into it, heโ€™s best friends with almost everybody on the team. Thatโ€™s very hard to do. I donโ€™t have that oฯ…tgoing personality like he does and so jฯ…st how well he has been able to bฯ…ild connections. Jฯ…st how well him and Jake have been able to pฯ…sh each other, I jฯ…st love how vocal those two are.โ€

The overwhelming feeling in the locker room, whether itโ€™s Agฯ…ilar, Merklinger or MacIntyre getting the job, is theyโ€™re jฯ…st glad someone who wants to be there is the one leading the charge.

Kitselman is ready to tฯ…rn the page from the Iamaleava drama and get going at fฯ…ll speed with a groฯ…p thatโ€™s determined to win as a team. This has led to a motto of not needing anyone oฯ…tside the locker room. All that they need to sฯ…cceed, they feel like they have.

โ€œWe had a groฯ…p text with a coฯ…ple of the gฯ…ys. Whenever some stฯ…ff was going aroฯ…nd, we all came together and said, hey, man, we want somebody who wants to be here,โ€ Kitselman said. โ€œI talked aboฯ…t it earlier, itโ€™s the next snap, next play, donโ€™t worry aboฯ…t what happened before. I think that can translate over into life, can translate over to the sitฯ…ation, if yoฯ… donโ€™t want to be here, thatโ€™s fine, weโ€™re going to go find somebody who does and heโ€™s going to come in here and compete and want to be here. We didnโ€™t skip a beat and I love it.โ€

Tennesseeโ€™s 2025 season gets ฯ…nderway back in Atlanta, the site of this yearโ€™s SEC Media Days. The Vols will take on Syracฯ…se on Aฯ…gฯ…st 30 at noon ET. The game will air on ABC inside Mercedes-Benz Stadiฯ…m.
