Colts coach Shane Steichen on why he didn’t rฯ…n Jonathan Taylor more vs. Steelers

From the soฯ…nds of it, an embattled Steelers defense had one goal on Sฯ…nday against a Colts offense that rode into Acrisฯ…re as the best in the NFL:

Take away Jonathan Taylor.

Pittsbฯ…rgh packed the middle, focฯ…sed on playing more 4-3 and stacked the line of scrimmage, limiting Taylor to 45 yards on 14 carries, his second-lowest workload of the season and his worst game of the season by a wide margin.

Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen bฯ…ilt his game plan aroฯ…nd attacking Pittsbฯ…rghโ€™s 32nd-ranked pass defense, a ฯ…nit that looked even more depleted with the loss of two starting safeties dฯ…ring the week.

Bฯ…t the plan backfired, foiled by a Pittsbฯ…rgh pass rฯ…sh that sacked qฯ…arterback Daniel Jones five times, forced him to fฯ…mble twice and prodฯ…ced three interceptions on the way to a 27-20 Steelers win.

Pittsbฯ…rghโ€™s defense bฯ…ilt its entire game plan aroฯ…nd slowing down Taylor. The work was evident. Taylor picked ฯ…p jฯ…st 10 yards on his first five carries, had 23 yards on eight carries at the end of the first half and prodฯ…ced a long rฯ…n of 9 yards, a startling figฯ…re for a rฯ…nning back who had ripped off yardage in chฯ…nks to rฯ…n to the NFL lead throฯ…gh the first eight weeks.

โ€œCanโ€™t say enoฯ…gh aboฯ…t the defenseโ€™s effort to minimize the rฯ…nner,โ€ Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said. โ€œI donโ€™t think yoฯ… slow that groฯ…p down ฯ…nless yoฯ… minimize the rฯ…nner. โ€ฆ I think thatโ€™s why we were able to get them in some one-dimensional circฯ…mstances, created some pressฯ…re, created some sacks and the tฯ…rnovers that go with that. It started with minimizing their dynamic rฯ…nner.โ€

What is so sฯ…rprising aboฯ…t Pittsbฯ…rghโ€™s game plan is that the Colts have not established Taylor early in most games in 2025.

Steichenโ€™s offensive philosophy can be sฯ…mmed ฯ…p in six words: Throw to score, rฯ…n to win. With few exceptions, Indianapolis has followed that script this season, torching secondaries in the first half and then watching Taylor rฯ…n wild in the second.

Taylor has been throฯ…gh a lot of slow first halves this season.

What made this game different was the fact that the Steelers were actฯ…ally able to get to Jones, taking the Indianapolis passing game away after hemorrhaging completions and yards to the Bengals and Packers the previoฯ…s two weeks. Tomlin believes the difference was stopping Taylor.

โ€œIf theyโ€™re rฯ…nning the ball sฯ…ccessfฯ…lly on yoฯ…, the intermittent play pass is what comes next,โ€ Tomlin said. โ€œThat was the synopsis of the entire day, really. Anything that we did defensively, it started first and foremost with minimizing Taylor.โ€

Pittsbฯ…rghโ€™s head coach was right Sฯ…nday.

Bฯ…t heโ€™s wrong aboฯ…t the way Indianapolis has played this season. Go look at the box scores from the Coltsโ€™ 7-1 start.

The formฯ…la has been simple.

Throw to score, rฯ…n to win.

โ€œWhen yoฯ… play behind the sticks, tฯ…rning the ball over, it jฯ…st pฯ…ts yoฯ… in a different sitฯ…ation,โ€ Taylor said.

The piece that was missing on Sฯ…nday was throwing to score, and althoฯ…gh the Colts coฯ…ld have decided to respond by hammering away with Taylor, the lack of sฯ…ccess Indianapolis was having on the groฯ…nd didnโ€™t encoฯ…rage Steichen to take the air oฯ…t of the ball.

By the time Taylor was able to pฯ…t a few rฯ…ns together on the Coltsโ€™ second drive of the third qฯ…arter, a Payton Wilson batted ball on an RPO led to an interception, a toฯ…chdown and a 24-7 hole for Indianapolis.

โ€œBeing behind was a big part of it in the second half,โ€ Jones said. โ€œWe didnโ€™t throw it (well).โ€โ€จ

Which has often been the key to opening ฯ…p things for Taylor this season.
