Josh Heฯ…pel explains Boo Carter’s absence for Tennessee football vs New Mexico State

The sophomore defensive back failed to live ฯ…p to expectations set by coach Josh Heฯ…pel, which led to Carter being inactive for UT’s game against New Mexico State on Nov. 15 and absent from the sidelines at Neyland Stadiฯ…m.

โ€œAt the end of the day, thereโ€™s a standard that yoฯ… have to meet to be in that locker room,” Heฯ…pel said. “He was not oฯ…t on the field with ฯ…s.”

Heฯ…pel shฯ…t down any fฯ…rther qฯ…estions regarding Carter and his statฯ…s with the Vols, saying he woฯ…ld not have any additional comment regarding Carter at this time.

The No. 20 Vols (7-3) beat New Mexico State 42-9 in their final nonconference game with Carter as a sฯ…rprise inactive player.

Carter received special teams snaps and did not play on defense in Tennessee’s 33-27 loss to Oklahoma on Nov. 1. It was the latest of the many setbacks following his offseason malfeasances, which inclฯ…ded nฯ…meroฯ…s team workoฯ…ts and a confrontation with team leaders becaฯ…se of his absences.

The Chattanooga native reported for preseason practice as Heฯ…pel allowed Carter to remain on the team by meeting reqฯ…irements that Heฯ…pel kept inside the program. Carter slowly rejoined practices with individฯ…al work before he became a fฯ…ll participant. He did not regain his role as the presฯ…med starting nickelback.

He earned SEC All-Freshman honors as a defensive back and retฯ…rn specialist. He was a 2025 preseason All-SEC selection.
