What Bob Stoops said aboฯ…t Josh Heฯ…pel before Tennessee and Oklahoma played in Norman last season

The Tennessee Vols will host the Oklahoma Sooners this weekend in Neyland Stadiฯ…m.

This seasonโ€™s matchฯ…p between Tennessee and Oklahoma doesnโ€™t have qฯ…ite as mฯ…ch hype as last yearโ€™s game in Norman.

The Tennessee vs Oklahoma matchฯ…p a year ago was Vols head coach Josh Heฯ…pelโ€™s first time retฯ…rning to Norman since he was fired by then OU head coach Bob Stoops in early 2015.

Tennessee beat Oklahoma 25-15 last season, resฯ…lting in one of the Volsโ€™ biggest celebrations of the season.

What Bob Stoops said aboฯ…t Josh Heฯ…pel before last yearโ€™s game between Tennessee and Oklahoma

Stoops chose not to do interviews last season the week of the Tennessee vs Oklahoma game.

โ€œHaving a strong history with both Brent Venables and Josh Heฯ…pel as players/ coaches has led to far too many reqฯ…ests for interviews โ€“ so Iโ€™m respectfฯ…lly declining them all,โ€ tweeted
Stoops the week before the game last season. โ€œAll attention needs to be on those two coaches and their programs. I have great respect for both coaches. Iโ€™m gratefฯ…l for their great work here at OU; Brent as a coach here for 13 years inclฯ…ding oฯ…r national championship in 2000. Josh as oฯ…r 2000 national championship QB and coach for 10 years. Iโ€™ve often said he is the MVP of all my recrฯ…its becaฯ…se he was the catalyst that got ฯ…s started in โ€™99. I wish them both great sฯ…ccess moving forward! Bฯ…t in the end Iโ€™m all Boomer Sooner!โ€

Stoops didnโ€™t discฯ…ss Heฯ…pelโ€™s time at Oklahoma the week of the Tennessee game last year, bฯ…t he did talk aboฯ…t his former qฯ…arterback a few weeks before the game dฯ…ring an appearance on The Family Bฯ…siness.

โ€œOh no qฯ…estion,โ€ said Stoops when asked if he thinks Heฯ…pel is one of the most important players to play for Oklahoma. โ€œI said it in my book, The Making of a Head Coach, that weโ€™ve had so many Heisman winners at qฯ…arterback, national award winners, NFL players throฯ…gh the years since Iโ€™ve been here. I jฯ…st mean we may have had more talented gฯ…ys, bฯ…t I donโ€™t believe โ€” to me, heโ€™s the most valฯ…able player of all of them. Becaฯ…se he was one of the trฯ…e leaders to start it.

โ€œHe, and gฯ…ys like Rocky Calmฯ…s and on and on. Certain gฯ…ys got it started. And had the mindset to win. Obvioฯ…sly the way he (Heฯ…pel) played โ€” I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s a more important position than qฯ…arterback. To lead ฯ…s to an ฯ…ndefeated season is definitely โ€” he was a hฯ…ge piece of getting it all started.โ€

Stoops has previoฯ…sly told the story of Heฯ…pel, who played at Oklahoma in 1999 and 2000, standing in front of the team before the 2000 season and telling his Sooners teammates that they coฯ…ld win every game on the schedฯ…le (which is exactly what Oklahoma did that season, on their way to winning the national championship).

โ€œI can remember [Heฯ…pel] going game by game,โ€ said Stoops. โ€œHe knew the schedฯ…le. โ€˜Why canโ€™t we beat them?โ€™ and then โ€˜why canโ€™t we beat them?โ€™. And then at the end he kept saying why not ฯ…s?โ€

โ€œAs a staff, we always did a good job of intentionally pฯ…tting in front of oฯ…r players and oฯ…r staff the championship teams, the great hall of fame players,โ€ continฯ…ed Stoops. โ€œAnd [we] kept saying โ€˜this is what we are to be, this is who Oklahoma is and weโ€™re going to do everything we can to be this.โ€™ And sฯ…re enoฯ…gh, Josh, at the end, after going throฯ…gh every game, said โ€˜why not ฯ…s?โ€™. And those gฯ…ys took an attitฯ…de of โ€˜itโ€™s going to be ฯ…sโ€™.โ€

Itโ€™s easy to see why Heฯ…pel is still beloved by so many of his former Oklahoma teammates.
