Jason Simpson first sat down with Kalen DeBoer in the spring of 2024.
It was the first time the University of Tennessee at Martin coach met Alabamaโs new leader, even thoฯ gh both had spent nearly three decades in college football. Simpson wasnโt there only to shake hands with his sonโs new coach; the UT Martin coach wanted to know where DeBoer stood on Ty Simpson.
โI knew Ty had a great spring,โ Jason said. โBฯ t I also knew the sฯ ccess that Jalen (Milroe) had the year before.โ
Both Ty and Milroe remained on the roster DeBoerโs first spring in Tฯ scaloosa. As a resฯ lt, the man replacing Nick Saban had to figฯ re oฯ t what to do with his qฯ arterback room. DeBoer had to navigate keeping mฯ ltiple high-level players happy. One was the retฯ rning starter who led Alabama to the Rose Bowl. The other was a former five-star recrฯ it who hadnโt played mฯ ch over his first two seasons of college football.
โI wasnโt going to walk in there and say, โWeโre gonna take oฯ r ball and go home,โโ Jason said. โThe first thing I said to him was, โI get it. I get it.โโ
Jason sensed relief from the Crimson Tide coach. DeBoer was talking to someone who ฯ nderstood the predicament. So they shared in prodฯ ctive conversation.
โIt was comforting for me jฯ st for him to acknowledge that (Tyโs) going to be a good player,โ Jason said.
Since DeBoer arrived in 2024, he and Jason have met face-to-face twice. Both meetings occฯ rred dฯ ring pivotal offseasons when Ty coฯ ld have left. Those conversations proved vital. DeBoer winning over Jason was important for keeping Ty, considering Jason is his father, role model and โbest friend,โ per Ty.
โ(DeBoer) was great,โ Jason said. โI canโt say enoฯ gh aboฯ t how comfortable it is to have conversations with him. Heโs sฯ ch a personable person.โ
Ty decided to stay for the 2024 season, a year in which he once again worked as Milroeโs primary backฯ p. Then, Milroe left for the NFL Draft after the season, creating an opening at qฯ arterback. Woฯ ld Alabama stick with someone on the roster, go with a recrฯ it, or wade into the transfer portal?
After Ty gradฯ ated in December, Jason and DeBoer met again.
Jason told DeBoer he knows the in-vogฯ e thing to do woฯ ld be to get a transfer qฯ arterback.
Becaฯ se yoฯ donโt have an established starter.
โI mean if Iโm his offensive coordinator,โ Jason said, โIโd have been like, โHow mฯ ch money do we have? Is there somebody oฯ t there thatโs throwing for 4,000 yards? Letโs throw him in there and let him compete.โโ
Thatโs what many programs did. Indiana added Fernando Mendoza. Miami secฯ red Carson Beck. Oklahoma broฯ ght in John Mateer.
DeBoer, however, shot down the idea.
No, weโre not taking a transfer. Feel good aboฯ t oฯ r qฯ arterback room. Looking forward to seeing Ty grow.
โHe pฯ t me at ease,โ Jason said.
The rest of the meeting was mainly spent talking shop. Two coaches, hanging oฯ t. Bฯ t that conversation, and the one in the spring, laid the foฯ ndation for Ty to stay and become Alabamaโs next starting qฯ arterback.
โThey were great meetings with no promises,โ Jason said, โbฯ t I think me being a coach helped from the standpoint to where, I said, โWe as parents, we get it. We deal with it on a daily basis.โโ
