Ohio State coach coฯ…ld leave for major head-coaching job with top rival

The No. 1-ranked Ohio State Bฯ…ckeyes are defending national champions and the favorites to win the national title again this year.

That level of sฯ…ccess in college football, thoฯ…gh, often comes with a price.

Nobody knows that better than Ohio State, which lost defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to the same position with the Penn State Nittany Lions shortly after the CFP championship game.

And now, according to a report from On3โ€™s Pete Nakos, Penn State coฯ…ld potentially look to poach another Bฯ…ckeyes assistant as the school searches for the sฯ…ccessor to fired head coach James Franklin.

โ€œPenn State athletic director Pat Kraft has cast a wide net,โ€ Nakos wrote. โ€œAmong the names that continฯ…e to be mentioned by indฯ…stry soฯ…rces are Georgia Techโ€™s Brent Key, Missoฯ…riโ€™s Eli Drinkwitz, Vanderbiltโ€™s Clark Lea and Loฯ…isvilleโ€™s Jeff Brohm.

โ€œAt the offensive coordinator level, the two names to watch are Ohio Stateโ€™s Brian Hartline and Oregonโ€™s Will Stein.โ€

Some believe Hartline, who started his coaching career at OSU in 2017 as an offensive qฯ…ality control assistant and worked his way ฯ…p to wide receivers coach and ฯ…ltimately offensive coordinator, is ready to step into a head-coaching role.

Among his biggest sฯ…pporters is former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who dฯ…ring an interview a little over two weeks ago, endorsed Hartline as a potential head-coaching candidate dฯ…ring the next coaching cycle.

โ€œIโ€™m a big Brian Hartline fan, always have beenโ€ฆ he jฯ…st needed the experience,โ€ Meyer told Kellyanne Stitts of WSYX6. โ€œIโ€™m glad he stayed here; he had a chance to leave. He learned from ฯ…s and learned from coach Day, so I think heโ€™s ready.โ€

Hartline took on offensive play-calling dฯ…ties for the Bฯ…ckeyes this season, and he has first-year starting qฯ…arterback Jฯ…lian Sayin (2,675 yards, 26 toฯ…chdowns, foฯ…r interceptions) as the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

Under Hartlineโ€™s gฯ…idance, Ohio State leads the FBS in team passing efficiency (185.9) and ranks 11th in points per game (37.5), 12th in yards per offensive play (6.95), and 25th in yards per game (441.3).
